Details

Herbert Cole (Nugget) Coombs was an economist and public servant. Coombs was Director-General of Postwar Reconstruction (1943-49) and Governor of the Commonwealth and Reserve Banks (1949-68). After retirement, Coombs served as chairman of the Australian Council for the Arts/Australia Council (1967-74) and chairman of the Council for Aboriginal Affairs (1967-76). He was Chancellor of the Australian National University from 1968 to 1976.
